Never
equate losing with failure.
— Jack
Mackey,
Kansas and Missouri Lieutenant Governor of
Marketing, Toastmasters International

Key Point
|
|

|
|
When
I was in junior high school, I was walking through the cafeteria when
someone yelled out, "Hey, Moxley -- you walk like a duck!" I
was mortified. I lost my dignity that day, to be sure. But I learned
from it. The truth is, I did walk like a duck.
If that student had not robbed me of my dignity and pride that day, I
might still be walking like a duck! Losing, you see, is an opportunity.
It is a chance to learn. Think back upon the pains and losses of your
past -- is there a single one that didn't leave you a little smarter or
a little wiser?

Do successful people lose?
|
|

|
|
More
than most! Successful people are usually those who try more often than
unsuccessful people. They have more losses ... and more gains! Few that
we consider great leaders glided effortlessly to the top. Lincoln, Washington, Bill Gates, Pete Rose,
Paul Newman — they all experienced loss. They all lived through the
pains of embarrassing mistakes, miscalculations and blunders. They
learned from their losses, letting those lessons mold their thoughts
and actions into future success.

How to never lose . . .
|
|

|
|
The only way to never lose is to never try — never play the game
— never enter the battle. Most success stories are tales of
perseverance and survival, not luck. Consider:
1.
Where would you be if you had a
difficult upbringing, with little money and divorced parents? What if you had dyslexia? Suffered
a debilitating knee injury? Or dropped out of school? What if in
fact these were all true of
you — could you succeed? Ask Tom Cruise. Not only do all these
challenges describe his life, but he even "failed" at acting
initially, losing out in auditions for TV commercials. But he stuck
with it, eventually getting one small role, then another, then a better
one, then a bigger one, and the rest is history.
2.
How well would you succeed if you had
less than $400 to your name and were in a strange city? What if you
wanted to make it as an actor, but were only offered the role of
handing out free cigarette samples in front of a restaurant while
dressed as a big chicken? If you were Brad Pitt, you'd take that, learn
from it, and keep going.
Like Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, or
any other person of high achievement, use your losses to help you
acquire the street smarts you need to achieve success.
